Chief Roseman
James John Roseman
Batted: Right
Threw: Right
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 167 lbs.
Born: July 4, 1856 in New York, NY
Died: July 4, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY
Chief was not an Indian, but earned his
nickname—so the story goes—from his habit of letting out war whoops. He was
also a good enough ballplayer to nail down one of the outfield positions on the
all-time Metropolitans team. His last season in the big leagues produced his
career highs in batting average, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage.
He was also hit by 29 pitches; perhaps that is what dissuaded him from giving
it one more try. His 1887 Gold Coin card is pictured here, courtesy of the Library
of Congress. Apparently was both born on
and died on July 4th.
