John Shaffer

John W. "Cannon Ball" Shaffer
Batted: unknown
Threw: Right
Height: 5'10"
Weight: unknown
Born: February 18, 1864 in Lock Haven, PA
Died: November 21, 1926 in Endicott, NY

John was outstanding in his debut year for the Mets, and then in his sophomore season, was not. He never had another shot in the big leagues. He pitched two seasons in the majors, had the excellent nickname of "Cannon Ball," but no one is quite sure any more which hand he threw with (Baseball-Reference.com has since decided Right). Such was the record-keeping in the late nineteenth century. The sketch above also comes courtesy of Baseball-Reference.com—apparently a clip from an old team photo.
